Essential Tremor

Tremor is defined as an involuntary, rhythmic oscillatory movement of a part or parts of the body. There are over 15 kinds of tremor. Essential tremor is the most common, about 10 to 20 times as prevalent as Parkinson's disease. It usually affects hands and head.

Essential tremor may arise from abnormal function of the olivocerebellar circuit. The precise mechanism, however, is not clear.

Associated genes

ETM1 (FET1)
Linkage analysis has mapped the gene to chromosome 3q13.1. However, the gene has not been identified.

ETM2
Linkage analysis has mapped the gene to chromosome 2p22-p25. It has not been identified yet.

Another gene mapped to chromosome 4p could also be involved (reference).
